McGuinty stuck with status quo

Updated Political junkies are still processing what the results of last night’s two by-elections for seats in the legislature mean.

Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government is still one seat shy of a majority government after by-elections in Vaughan and Kitchener-Waterloo.

For the first time in the riding’s history, voters in Kitchener-Waterloo elected a New Democrat. A surge in support from teachers’ unions helped to elect Catherine Fife, head of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association.

In Vaughan, the Liberals were able to hold the riding vacated by former finance minister Greg Sorbara.

Steven Del Duca was congratulated at his victory party by Premier Dalton McGuinty in person. Del Duca captured 50 percent of the popular vote.
