McGuinty standing firm on GSA name
Dalton McGuinty is defending his government’s decision to require Catholic schools to allow students to call clubs gay-straight alliances.
Catholic school boards are fighting the planned change to legislation, and the Archbishop of Toronto says Catholic schools should be allowed to use their own ways to deal with homophobia. However, McGuinty says all publicly- funded schools in Ontario must be safe and accepting for all students.
“I have a different set of responsibilities. I’m accountable to all faiths. I’m accountable to people of no faith. I’m accountable to all parents. And i think, in fact I know that we have in common as parents. We want to make sure that our kids are respected and accepted for who they are.”
The NDP supports the Liberal government on this issue. The Conservatives say the government has no business legislating what students can name their clubs.
