The Maze Runner is a young adult science fiction film directed by Wes Ball and adapted from the novel of the same name by James Dashner. The film tells the story of Thomas, a young boy who wakes up on a strange elevator. When it stops and the door opens, he finds himself surrounded by other boys in a place called The Glade, an open area at the centre of a large concrete maze. Like the rest of the boys, Thomas has no memory of his past or his family. He quickly learns about his new surroundings and how the small colony works. Every 30 days a new boy arrives in the lift, until one unexpected arrival, a girl named Teresa, throws their routine for a loop. She knows Thomas, and he can read her thoughts. Thomas becomes the key to the group’s escape from the deadly maze. The film stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson.

Ball was happy to get the opportunity to direct The Maze Runner for a number of reasons. “I had this really strong image of what it looks like inside the Glade, which I saw as a raw, edgy, blown out, and naturalistic environment with imposing concrete walls surrounding it. I realized that it was a world I wanted to live over the next few years. Additionally, I love movies about world creation, and this film is a world creation, top to bottom. We start in the Glade, which the boys have built, then outside those walls, we enter the grand world of the Maze, and that’s a whole different scenario.”

The Maze Runner is rated PG.
