Massive aloe vera plant in Hamilton shop window

Just in time for sunburn season: an east Hamilton shop keeper is showing off an aloe vera plant that has more than enough to go around.
94 year old Stanley Whitaker who runs Yorkshire Lighting on Wentworth St S bought the plant 10 years ago at a greenhouse. Ever since, it’s been in the window of his shop and recently bloomed to nearly two metres tall.
He has a theory on why his plant is stretching for the sky. “Well it’s grown bit by bit each summer, and the sun coming in this window has encouraged it.”
Aloe vera plants thrive in sunny conditions. A spokesperson for Terra greenhouses says they rarely see aloe plants grow so large because many customers trim their leaves for their healing properties. Whitaker says he’s thinking about retirement and when he closes his shop he may donate his amazing aloe plant.
