Marine safety report from April accident

An internal safety report by Leander Boat Club reveals a number of marine reports went unchecked the morning 18 high school rowers were thrown in the water in April.

That’s when high winds swept through Burlington Bay, sending eight rowers and a coach to hospital.

Coaches checked five different weather sources before heading out on the water that morning.

But the marine warnings in question are accessed through a separate link on Environment Canada’s home page that was overlooked, and requires specialized knowledge to interpret.

The boat club has since provided the coaches with information on how to check marine warnings.

The damage of the accident was estimated at $100,000.
