Marching for sex workers’ safety
There was a colourful march with a serious message on the streets of St Catharines this afternoon.
The group carrying red umbrellas are out today, as December 17th is designated as the national day to end violence against sex trade workers.
They read the names aloud of dozens of women who died as a result of working in the sex trade. One of those women was Casey Chihocki, who was killed in 2005 by Michael Durant. He was given a life sentence last month for her murder. This year the Niagara major crime officers who arrested Durant joined the vigil, along with Casey Chihocki’s stepmother Wilma Kyle.
