Maple Leaf reaping complaints after trees cut

It was good news for Hamilton; but there are questions about whether Maple Leaf Foods will be a good neighbour for residents on Glover Road.

Last Thursday, crews from Hydro One showed up and cut down a number of mature trees leading into the construction site for the plant. Maple Leaf says it’s part of an approved plan to bring new power lines into the plant to meet its manufacturing needs.

Residents say they didn’t know anything about the plan, and were told at a Maple Leaf open house that new construction would not affect the landscape of glover road.

Maple Leaf says they knew trees would be cut on company property along a stretch of Glover Road, but weren’t aware of Hydro One’s requirements until last week.

Company representative Anne Tennier says the company will try to make amends to residents by offering to plant appropriate new trees, that won’t interfere with the hydro lines.
