The Special Investigations Unit was called in Thursday after a man plunged into the Niagara Gorge.
The man was transported by helicopter to Hamilton General Hospital after he fell nearly 45 metres.
There is an elevator that leads to the bottom of the gorge but rescue crews couldn’t use it because it was broken.
The extent of the man’s injuries is unknown at this time.
The S.I.U. is called in when police officers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
They conduct independent investigations to determine whether a criminal offence took place.
