A 39-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Eric Mueller, who died after responding to a disturbance at a home in Bourget, Ont., Thursday morning.

Mueller and two other officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. to a home in the Eastern Ontario village where someone reported hearing a gunshot, OPP said.

Police say someone at the home shot the officers when they arrived.

All three officers were sent to an Ottawa hospital, where Mueller later died of his injuries. OPP say one officer has been released from hospital, while the other remains there in stable condition.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique has said no one else appeared to be inside the home during the shooting and the three officers were the only ones shot.

Carrique has described Mueller as an exemplary officer, a well-respected mentor and 21-year law enforcement veteran.
