A 37-year-old man is in custody following a standoff with police and a serious stabbing in Niagara Falls.

Officers and paramedics were called to a “disturbance” in the area of Jubilee Dr. and Redhaven Cres. at 6:10 p.m. Sunday.

A woman in her 20s was found suffering from serious stab wounds. She was taken to a local hospital but later transported via Ornge ambulance to an out-of-region hospital.

Witnesses told police a man fled the scene in a red Kia vehicle. Investigators say he drove to the top of the Garden City Skyway where he was involved in a crash in the Toronto-bound lanes.

“The man exited his car and was involved in a standoff with responding officers. This resulted in both lanes of the Queen Elizabeth Highway being closed,” said police in a news release.

Niagara Regional Police Service Crisis Negotiators were brought in to negotiate with the man and he was taken into custody around 2 a.m. Monday.

Aaron Acton, of St. Catharines, has been charged with criminal harassment and attempt murder.

Acton was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries police say were suffered prior to the standoff.

All lanes of the QEW were reopened by 4 a.m.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident in the area of Jubilee Dr. and Redhaven Cres. to contact investigators at 905-688-4111, ext. 1022200.
