A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a bronze statue from a Niagara Falls cemetery.

Forty-three-year-old Shawn Mahew, of Niagara Falls, has been charged with theft over $5,000, fail to comply with undertaking, and fail to comply with probation.

Officers were called to the Drummond Hill Cemetery on Lundy’s Lane on Sept. 29 after a bronze statue of Lieutenant General Drummond was stolen.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives believe there is at least one other suspect.

Police say the removal of the statue would be labour intensive and possibly involve a vehicle to transport it.

The statue has not been located.

It is valued at roughly $10,000 and stands three-feet tall and is over two-feet in length.

Police say metal thieves hide evidence by cutting the stolen metal item into smaller pieces so that it can be transported and sold off easier.

Police are asking members of the public and scrap metal recyclers to be on the lookout for the statue.
