A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash in St. Catharines.

It happened around noon on Monday at the intersection of Lake St. and the North Service Rd.

Police say a Ford Fiesta was travelling westbound on the North Service Rd. when it attempted to turn onto Lake St. The Ford allegedly went directly into the path of an oncoming Dodge Ram that was travelling straight through the intersection.

The driver of the Dodge, a 33-year-old Niagara Falls man, was not hurt in the collision.

A 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the Ford was seriously injured and had to be extricated from the vehicle by St. Catharines Fire Services. He was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to an out of region trauma centre.

A 26-year-old woman who was driving the Ford was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

She has been charged with careless driving.

Police say the Ford was completely demolished in the crash. Damage to the Dodge is estimated at roughly $10,000.

The roadway was closed for several hours but reopened around 3:45 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact 905-688-4111, ext. 4233.
