Man, 30, fatally shot by police at Toronto’s Pearson Airport: SIU

Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating after Peel Regional Police officers fatally shot a man outside of Toronto Pearson International Airport Thursday morning.
Peel police responded shortly before 7 a.m. to a person in distress in a Jeep Cherokee at the departures level in Terminal 1.
Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah says three officers attempted to dissolve the dispute between two or three people who were at the airport “for the purpose of travel.”
After about 10 minutes of trying to resolve the incident, Duraiappah says a 30-year-old man “abruptly” brought out a firearm.
Peel police confirmed that two of its officers then fired gunshots at the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene, which was outside of the airport.

No officers were injured in the shooting and police say there is no known threat to public safety. Police could not confirm or deny whether the person was previously known to authorities.
Police say the incident had “nothing to do with the airport operations” and “was not an attack on critical infrastructure.”
Due to the investigation, the airport is rerouting passengers at the departures level to enter and exit Terminal 1 through the arrivals area.
Videos posted to social media showed a heavy police presence outside the terminal, with cars backed up leading to the departures level.
The Special Investigations Unit says the scene is expected to be held for several more hours.
Police let us exit cars and walk to the terminal now. Cars were still held. I think I saw over 30 police vehicles. Hearing one person confidently say what happened but who knows. #pearson pic.twitter.com/UiFzpuXNV6

A spokesperson for Toronto’s Pearson Airport says flights continue to operate normally at this time.
“Please use the roadway to Terminal 1 Arrivals as the roadway to the Terminal 1 Departures remains closed … The parking garage in Terminal 1 remains open … Passengers can also park at Terminal 3 and the Viscount Station Kiss and Fly lot and take the train to Terminal 1,” the airport posted on X.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about the investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 800-787-8529 or the SIU online.
