Malaysia’s Prime Minister confirmed today what many already believed to be true, the wing fragment found on Reunion Island last week was part of the missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370.

This confirmation is the first real breakthrough in the search for the Boeing 777 airliner that disappeared 16 months ago with 239 passengers and crew on board.

“Last week on the 29th of July we were informed by the french authorities that part of an aircraft wing had been found on Reunion, the French Island in the Indian Ocean. Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370.” announced Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The plane part, called a flap-eron, is the first piece of MH370 to be found. The wing component was discovered last week on the French Island of Reunion and it had 657BB written on it, proving it was from a Boeing 777. Flight MH370 went missing en route from Malaysia to China. In a statement, Malaysia Airlines offered its “deepest sorrow” to the families and friends of those on board the flight.

Reunion Island is one of France’s overseas territories. A deputy Paris prosecutor told reporters that a fragment of a suitcase was also found on the island, and would be tested by french police “as soon as possible.”
