Lucy is an action-thriller written and directed by French filmmaker Luc Besson (Taken, The Fifth Element). Scarlett Johansson stars in the title role as a woman abducted by the mob and forced to work as a drug mule. While she’s being held captive, a bag of strange experimental drugs ruptures in her stomach, causing Lucy’s cognitive capacity to increase tremendously. She quickly develops superhuman powers including telepathy, telekinesis, vastly expanded knowledge and a startling control over matter. While she tries to reach Professor Sam Norman (Morgan Freeman), a leading neuro-scientist, she must evade her former captors and fight to control her awakening brain.
When Johansson first got the script for Lucy, she found it a bit disorienting but knew she could trust Besson. “This is actually what drew me to this project,” she insists. “I had to trust Luc’s vision. I remember meeting him and he said, ‘You have to trust that I know what this is about because it can be vague at times. But if you see what I’m seeing, you’ll believe in it.’ So, I took a leap of faith. He’s a formidable guy who knows what he sees in his mind and wants that vision to be executed perfectly.”
Lucy is rated 14A.
