Management for a local market on Hamilton Mountain says they are “absolutely devastated” after a massive fire ripped through their business on Tuesday.

Fire crews were called to 178 Nebo Rd. shortly before 10 p.m.

The Hamilton Fire Department said in a tweet that firefighters were quickly pulled out of the 4,800 sq. ft. building after arrival and a “defensive operation” was initiated.

Residents from as far as downtown Hamilton could see the black smoke from the large plumes that were sent billowing into the air during the fire.

The grocery store is locally owned and operated and has been in business for the last seven years.

The store, formally known as Scoly’s Hometown Market, recently underwent a renovation and rebranding last November.

In a post on Facebook, the management team said they are still in shock about the destructive fire.

“Our staff, management and ownership are reeling over this, we had just put in so much time, effort and resources into upgrading our new store and were on the road to success thanks to the support of our amazing partners, vendors and customers,” states the post.

The business went on to thank the emergency crews as well as the customers who reached out after learning of the fire.

There is no word yet on the cause of the blaze.

The management team says the store will be closed for the foreseeable future.
