Live-in caregiver charged with theft in Burlington

A 55-year-old caregiver from Saint Lucia has been charged after money and personal items were stolen from a Burlington home.

Charmain Peter was arrested and charged with theft, possession of property obtained by crime and uttering threats.

Peter worked as a live-in care provider for one the elderly residents of the home. Police say some of the stolen property was recovered following her arrest.

Police are reminding residents to ensure you conduct a screening process for hiring live-in care providers and care providers who may be entering your home.

“If you hire them privately; ensure they are entitled to work in Canada with a Social Insurance number, conduct reference checks, and ask questions about their qualifications for the services they are going to be providing,” says Halton police. “Another method to ensure your safety and that you receive the professional care you are contracting for is to hire a registered and licensed Personal Support Worker.”
