Liberation in Libya declared after four decades

Libya’s new leaders announced the North African state’s liberation on Sunday, after 42 years of rule under Moammar Gadhafi.

The chairman of the National Transitional Council led a ceremony in Benghazi, the birthplace of the revolution. He was joined by leaders of military units that have fought Gadhafi’s forces since February.

The NTC chairman told the crowd Islamic Sharia law would be the basic source of legislation in the country, and existing laws that contradicted the teaching of Islam would be nullified.

Officials say today’s declaration sets the path for elections after months of bloodshed ended Thursday with Gadhafi’s death.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada will continue to work with transitional leaders as the new Libya takes shape.

“We join Libyans in welcoming the post-Gadhafi era and the transition of the country to a democratic society – one that respects human rights and the rule of law,” Harper said in an issued statement.
