Canada’s major party leaders were speaking with supporters Friday, with NDP Jagmeet Singh shoring up support on Hamilton Mountain.

Ahead of the last weekend before Canada chooses its next parliament leaders made another push for support before Monday’s vote.

The people on Hamilton Mountain spoke with CHCH News, outlining two things that were at the top of their minds: Trump tariffs and the high cost of living, and it’s also something the leaders are campaigning on.

“So that’s why I ask of you to vote, it’s your democratic right,” said Singh.

The leader of the New Democratic Party spoke to people while inside the Hamilton Mountain Mosque.

CHCH News was able to speak with a few people that attended the event to ask what they felt was most important to them.

“We want peace of mind, the security issue, people are not feeling safe in their houses,” said one person who was at the mosque.

“This is about our country, we need to do whatever we can to deal with the issues that we have with Trump,” said another person.

“What’s important for me, is making Canada good and to make life for people better,” said one more person that attended the event.

Singh said he agreed with many of the attendee’s worries and that “they are right.”

“I think it’s true, I think people are really worried about [Trump’s tariffs] and in all of that the real worries people have is that it will make their lives even more expensive when things are already so expensive,” said Singh.

“They are worried they might lose their jobs and what we’re proposing are real ways to make life more affordable; we are saying let’s put a cap on grocery essentials. This is done in France and Greece and it’s brought down prices very quickly.”

Liberal Leader Mark Carney also promised to fight Trump tariffs.

“President Trump wants to divide us, because dividing us would make his job easier,” said Carney. “He is trying to break us so that America can own us and that will never happen.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he has three main changes he wants to make happen.

“We are going to keep parliament open all summer long to pass three laws to bring change,” said Poilievre. “One, the Affordability for a Change Act; two, the Safe Streets Act; and three, the Bring Home Our Jobs for a Change Act.”

Polls open on Monday, with all the results covering Hamilton, Halton, Niagara and across the country on CHCH News.
