Brock University professors and staff are demanding the university review its sexual harassment policies after it was revealed a student was sexually harassed by a professor. Almost 75 members of faculty at the university signed an open letter to the school’s President Jack Lightstone demanding action from the president’s office, which has stayed silent throughout the whole ordeal.

President Jack Lightstone met with protestors this week and says the university takes the issue of sexual harrassment very seriously.

“I’ve issued one release and two emailed letters to faculty staff and students. I think the universities commitment to this has been very clear.”

But not clear enough for many staff and students.

“Students have been confused, mystified by the way the university has dealt with it and so when I have had those conversations usually they are pretty glad to talk to a faculty member to hear our prospective.”
Tim Conley, Brock professor.

Conley was at this week’s protest, he and a number of faculty members were concerned after learning the university warned a former student to keep quiet about an internal sexual harassment investigation. It found the student’s history professor David Schimmelpennick Van Der Oye gave her alcohol and forced himself on her in 2014. The professor continued to teach at the university up until two weeks ago, but is still not clear if there was any disciplinary actions.

No charges have been filed against the professor.

While faculty members are not calling for the professor’s resignation, they are hoping this letter will start a conversation with the administration.
