Elementary school teachers across the province are set to expand their work-to-rule action starting Monday.

Approximately 76 thousand elementary school teachers will further withdraw from meetings including those with principals. As the school year winds down, these schools will not participate in any field trips, the teachers will not participate in professional development activities, and teachers will not fill out comments on report cards.

The schools affected have so far missed the province-wide testing for grade three and six students (EQUA).

Negotiations have been done on two levels so far. The province is handling issues such as salary, sick days and class sizes.

While a variety of other issues are being discussed locally, Chair of the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board, Todd White, says students and parents will not see much of a change Monday morning.

Sam Hammond, Elementary Teacher’s Union President, was not available for further comment on Sunday, but did release a statement on Friday saying “we are increasing the strike action because of the obstinacy of the government and OPSBA in addressing real issues that affect teachers and the learning conditions in our schools. It’s time the government and OPSBA stopped playing games.”
