It is the end of an era for mail delivery on Hamilton mountain. As of Monday, 36 000 mountain residents will have their mail delivered to a community mailbox.
Shawn Spicer has been with Canada Post for 21 years, and a letter carrier for the last 9 years.
After today he will no longer be delivering mail door to door on Hamilton mountain.
Times are changing, volumes are down, unfortunately the internet is taking over our mail stream.”
Residents on Shawn’s route will now have to get their mail from a community mailbox.
“They’re gonna miss me, the service…talking to myself…some seniors the letter carrier is the only contact they have with someone outside of their house.”
He says that personal connection with his customers is what he’ll miss the most.
“You build that bond. I’ve attended several wakes, funerals of customers, loved ones who’ve passed away…you have that friendship.”
The first paid mail delivery in Canada was way back in 1693, 174 years later the federal post office was created.
