Last Canadian military aircraft has left Kabul

Acting Chief of the Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre says the last Canadian military aircraft flew out of Kabul today.

Canada evacuated around 3,700 people from Afghanistan, which fell to the Taliban earlier this month.

At a briefing this morning, Eyre said Canada stayed in Afghanistan as long as it could.

He added that it is heartbreaking the military could not stay longer and rescue more Afghans.

The majority of Canadian personnel left Kabul airport around 12:00 a.m. Eastern time.

The White House reports 13,400 people were evacuated in 24 hours from early this morning on Washington time.

That included 5,100 people aboard U-S military planes and
8,300 on coalition and partner aircraft.
