OPP says Labour Day weekend fatals down, impaired and speeding charges up


Provincial police say the number of fatalities on roads, waterways and trails they patrol dropped by more than half over the Labour Day long weekend, compared with last year.
Police say preliminary statistics indicate there were three fatalities over the long weekend, down from eight during the same weekend in 2010.

However, the force laid more charges for offences such as
impaired driving and speeding.
There were 6,472 speeding charges, compared with 5,889 in 2010,
and 91 street racing charges, up from 64.
Police laid 120 charges for impaired driving or having a blood-alcohol level over .08, a rise from 115 in 2010.
There were 105 roadside licence suspensions for drivers in the warning range of .05 to .08, which was down from 247 last year.
