King William closing to cars to make room for patios

Hamilton’s King William Street will close to vehicles Friday to make room for more outdoor patios.

The move is part of an effort to give a boost to local bars and restaurants.

In May, city council approved a motion to create or extend temporary outdoor patios until the fall.

It allows restaurants and bars to take over sidewalks, parking lots and alleys to extend service space outside.

Applications could also include road closures, like the one on King William.

Hamilton will be moving into Stage two of re-opening on Friday.

Restaurants will be able to open for dining in outdoor areas, so long as physical distancing and safety measures are in place.

The city says it has received 30 applications for extended patios and dozens of other inquiries.

The applications will be reviewed for safety and impact on other businesses.

The King William closure will begin at 10 a.m. Friday between James St. N and Hughson Ave.
