A fire in an East end Hamilton apartment building has left one man dead and a woman in serious condition.

Officials say there is nothing suspicious about the fire and it was careless smoking to blame.

Brenda Lampman lives on the 9th floor at 2130 King Street East where a fire broke out in an apartment on the 5th floor just after 5am Thursday morning.

Both used oxygen tanks for medical reasons. The Ontario Fire Marshal says it was a combination of a lit cigarette and oxygen that caused a flash fire.

Firefighters removed both the man and the women who tenants say are in their 60’s.

The man was given CPR immediately. Both were taken to Hamilton General Hospital where the man died. The woman remains in serious condition.

When firefighters arrived they were called to the 8th floor where it was smokey. Turns out
the smoke had traveled from the fifth floor where the fire had started.

While the smoke could be smelt throughout the building the fire was contained to one unit.

The couple did have a cat who survived the fire and was taken by the SPCA.

Damage is estimated at 35 thousand dollars.

The Fire Marshal says there was a working smoke detector in the unit and wants to remind everyone at home to check theirs.
