With hockey season set to begin, you may notice an iconic name appearing on the ice for the first time in over 20 years. Kenesky Sport and Cycle on Barton Street is the place where the goalie pad was invented and starting this season, their pads will once again be on store shelves.

They’re a modern pad, with a classic name, Kenesky “the original brand” in goalie equipment is back and owner Joel Hullsman couldn’t be happier. “The stuff looks great the graphics are deadly, it’s good looking.”

Hullsman partnered with 2 men who used to design for some of the current big brands. They were looking to start a new company and came to the oldest hockey store in the world. “I jumped at the chance.”

In 1924 Emil Pop Kenesky was asked to help Hamilton Tigers goalie Jakie Forbes. Kenesky designed the pads based on ones used in cricket. By the late 1960’s every NHL goalie was using pads made in this room, including both Terry Sawchuck and Johnny Bower when the Leafs won in 1967.

Hullsman, who began working here when he was 12 and bought the business years later is happy to get back in the game, but is also aware of what that means. “Small, small place, against the big boys.”
