Here is some information now about how to keep on track with weight loss resolutions.

Research shows one week into January, 25% of people have already fallen off the wagon.

And with every week that passes, more people will give up on their goals. But some people will succeed and if you want to be one of them, you’ve got to plan.

Your gym may be a little busier these days. But the influx of ‘New Year’s Resolutioners’ won’t last long.

A study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology says that 40 per cent of New Year’s resolutions are fitness or weight loss related. But only half of the people who make them will keep those resolutions for more than six months.

So how do you become part of the half that does?

Penny Vassalli: “Came to the gym, got a trainer, learned proper nutrition, learned how to work out properly.”

For Penny Vassalli, sticking with fitness is about enjoying her workout.

McMaster University Exercise Psychologist Kathleen Martin Ginis agrees. She says people who take pleasure in their routine are more likely to stick with it: “They might find that they enjoy socializing with others when they exercise. Or they realize how good, positive and upbeat they feel after a workout.”

Try a few options and find one that really clicks for you.

Vira Caruso is General Manager of Goodlife Fitness: “Hot yoga. I think it’s fantastic to go into one of those classes or working out, making sure that you’re getting to do some kick boxing or getting on the treadmill and being able to watch your favourite show at that time. They make big differences.”

Set realistic goals about what you hope to accomplish and write down specific plans for how you’ll achieve them.

Ginis: “What days are you going to exercise? Where are you going to exercise? What activities are you going to do and for how long?”

Treat physical activity like an appointment and pencil it into your calendar. If you do, chances are you’ll still be doing it come February.

You’ve also got to anticipate bumps in the road that could derail your resolution and find solutions to them before they happen. For example, if there’s a snow storm, you can plan an at home workout.
