Justin Trudeau visits Locke St. during Hamilton visit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Hamilton as he continues a three-province tour to show his support for steel and aluminum workers.

Trudeau kicked off the three-day tour Monday in Quebec where he met with steel workers and union leaders at Rio Tinto Ltd’s smelting plant.

The tour is an effort to show the government’s support for the industries in the wake of President Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25 per cent tariff on imported steel and 10 per cent on aluminum. Both Canada and Mexico have been exempt from the tariffs temporarily while the countries negotiate a new NAFTA deal.

Trudeau arrived in Hamilton late Monday and stopped by West Town Bar and Grill for a drink and to speak with residents. The visit was organized by local MPs Filomena Tassi and Bob Bratina.

Trudeau will begin Tuesday at CHCH News for an interview on Morning Live before heading to a brief tour and meet with workers of Stelco Hamilton Works. He will then participate in a roundtable discussion with steel industry leaders at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel before his final stop at ArcelorMittal Dofasco.

Following his stop in Hamilton today, Trudeau will then head to Algoma steel in Sault Ste. Marie and then he is off to Regina.
