Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to join mourners in Richmond Hill Monday afternoon to mark four years since the Iranian military shot down Flight PS752.

All passengers aboard the flight were killed when Iranian officials shot down the Ukraine International Airlines plane shortly after take-off from Tehran in 2020.

The majority of passengers were bound for Canada, with 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents on board.

Two PhD students at McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering identified as Iman Aghabali and Mehdi Eshaghian were among those killed, along with former postdoctoral fellow at the school Siavash Maghsoudlou.

Trudeau is expected to be joined at the ceremony by Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, and Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez.

The event follows a candlelight vigil held in Toronto just one day prior and is one of several events planned globally to mark the anniversary.

The families of victims have continued the fight for Iran to take responsibility for the tragic event, with Canada being one of three countries to refer the case forward to the International Court of Justice last July.
