More than half of Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet Ministers are political newcomers who won for the first time on October 19th – including his Finance Minister.
His cabinet is diverse. It includes a mix of fresh faces and political veterans, and fulfills his promise to have an even number of men and women on the front bench.
When asked why that was important to him he said “because it’s 2015.”
Outside Rideau Hall, hundreds of people lined the walkway to watch the ceremony on large screens. Trudeau has put some veteran MPs in key roles, tapping Stephane Dion as his Foreign Affairs Minister and Ralph Goodale to serve as the new Public Safety Minister. Marc Garneau becomes Transport Minister.
But 18 of the newly minted Ministers are rookies. Newcomer Bill Morneau gets the prize portfolio of Finance. The millionaire Toronto businessman is the former head of a human resources company, who has Bay Street savvy.
Harjit Sajjan takes on the role of National Defence Minister. He’s a combat veteran, serving in Bosnia and on three deployments to Afghanistan. His Associate Minister Kent Hehr, who is also the new Minister for Veterans’ affairs, is a former lawyer.
Catherine McKenna, an Ottawa lawyer focused on international trade, becomes environment and climate change minister.
Trudeau is taking on the roles as Minister of Intergovernmental affairs and Minister of Youth.
