Jury selection in Musgrave trial
Jury selection began Tuesday in the Brandon Musgrave murder trial. The 18-year-old was shot to death in March of 2010. Police say he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, a Dundurn Street student house party that turned violent. Lisa Hepfner has more from the John Sopinka Courthouse.
Both accused were brought into court first thing and they sat as far apart as possible in the prisoner box. Joshua Warner is about 23 now, he wore a dark suit, still has a shaved head and a shadow of a beard. Tyrone Chambers is about 25 now, he wore a grey suit, and is a bit taller and thinner than Warner, and he wears dark rimmed glasses and has a big bushy pony tail. Both were attentive and respectful throughout the day. Twice, when big groups of potential jurors crowded into the courtroom, they stood and pleaded not guilty to the second degree murder of Brandon Musgrave and the aggravated assault of two other men whe were shot the night Musgrave was killed.
Gunfire erupted on March 13, 2010, at a Columbia college student house party on Dundurn Street. A party that had been advertised on Facebook. Police said it was something ridiculous that started the violence. Some said it was a disagreement over the music being played. 18-year old Brandon Musgrave was shot in the head and died the next day, his huge family devestated.
Weeks later, Tyrone Chambers was arrested in Halifax. His girlfriend was charged and later pled guilty to helping him escape.
It was a year before police tracked down Josh Warner, who had been hiding out in South America. He was arrested in Guyana.
Nine jurors were selected Tuesday so jury selection will continue Wednesday morning. The trial is expected to last eight weeks. Janet Musgrave’s birthday was Tuesday. They will be here during the procedings, three years later, still suffering the loss of a kind soul with a great sense of humour.
