The fate of the two people accused of killing OPP Const. Greg Pierzchala in December 2022 now lies in the hands of the jury.

Just before 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Justice Andrew Goodman finished giving his instructions to the jury, allowing them to begin the deliberation process to determine whether Randall McKenzie and Brandi Stewart-Sperry are guilty of first-degree murder.

One focus in court was Stewart-Sperry’s state of mind on the day Pierzchala was shot and killed.

The court heard that Steart-Sperry had a history of drug use and tested positive for fentanyl and amphetamines at the time of her arrest.

Const. Pierzchala was shot six times while responding to a vehicle in a ditch near Hagersville on Dec. 27, 2022.

His final moments were captured on his body-worn camera, providing the jury with a first-hand account of the incident.

That video was shown several times throughout the trial, alongside extensive surveillance footage which shows the pair’s movements following the shooting.

Deliberations are expected to continue into Friday.
