Hamilton NDP candidate Alex Johnstone has pledged to work with B’nai Brith Canada to raise awareness about racism, discrimination, anti-semitism and the holocaust.

The candidate in the new riding of Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas found herself facing voter backlash this week over her response to concerns raised about questionable comments she made on Facebook seven years ago.

In that post, Johnstone made a crude reference to a fence post in a friend’s photo of the Auschwitz death camp in Poland.

While Johnstone was quick to post an apology and remove the original post after it came to light, when asked about it, the 32-year-old claimed she hadn’t heard of Auschwitz — until now.

After referring all media inquiries yesterday to the national NDP campaign, the current Hamilton school trustee released a statement pledging to work with Canada’s foremost Jewish human rights organization.
