A Hamilton city councillor is throwing in his hat as the Liberal candidate in Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas.

The riding association confirmed to CHCH News that John-Paul Danko would be their candidate in the upcoming federal election just hours after the campaign kicked off Sunday.

After joining the Liberal party in 2021 before the federal election, Danko cancelled his membership in June of the following year, saying that it is better for municipal councillors to not be affiliated with political parties.

Since 2015, the riding has been held by Liberal Cabinet Minister Filomena Tassi, who has decided not to run for re-election.

Danko has been the city councillor for Ward 8 in Hamilton since 2018.

Canadians will cast their ballots on April 28. Advance polls will be open between April 18-21.
