32-year old John Gallagher was a retired Canadian Soldier. He was volunteering with Kurdish forces in Syria when he was killed two weeks ago. Its still unclear if he was shot at close range or killed by a suicide bomber.

Today, dozens gathered at a Toronto funeral home today to pay their respects. Including many Kurish Canadians holding signs with Gallagher’s picture.

His body was driven from Toronto to a community near Chatham. As the procession traveled along the 401 this afternoon people stopped to pay their respects.

Because Gallagher wasn’t fighting as a member of Canada’s military, he didn’t receive the formal military repatriation ceremony. The Canadian Heroes Foundation says a public ceremony for Gallagher will be held in Toronto at a later date.

John Gallagher is the first Canadian fighter killed fighting ISIS.
