Joe

Joe is a drama directed by David Gordon Green. Nicolas Cage stars in the title role as an ex-convict working for a tree clearing company. One day a boy named Gary approaches Joe asking if he and his father can get any work, to which Joe agrees. He quickly bonds with the boy, eventually learning about his struggles at home with his alcoholic, abusive father. As the situation worsens, Joe wants to help but his checkered past makes it a risky proposition. Joe co-stars Tye Sheridan and Gary Poulter.
In February 2013, after production had finished, actor Gary Poulter was found dead in a shallow pool of water near Austin, Texas. When the movie was set to begin shooting, the producers looked for locals to flesh out their cast, surrounding their stars with real non-professional actors like the homeless Poulter. He led a colourful life; before shooting Joe, he served in the Navy, learned Japanese, and was a breakdancer and street performer (you can read a detailed chronicle/obituary of Gary here).
Joe is rated 14A.
