As many as 290 positions will disappear by the end of the year as Ontario Power Generation shuts down two more units at Nanticoke.
That will leave only four of the plant’s eight generators in operation as the Ontario government continues to phase out coal-generated electricity. At peak capacity, Nanticoke could output enough at once to power 2 million homes for a whole year.
Just 234 out of the 634 positions that existed before two units shut down in 2009 will be left — although OPG says no one is facing a lay-off at this point. A number of positions have already been left vacant, and OPG says about half of the affected staff are eligible for retirement or may transfer to other locations.
The Progressive Conservatives have committed to converting the plant to burn natural gas & biomass, while the Liberals are still deciding what to do with it once coal generation stops in 2014.
