The flooding in Burlington from Monday night’s storm has forced the cancellation of some surgeries and tests at Joseph Brant Hospital.

Up to 45 centimetres of water are said to have seeped into the basement, causing a sewage back up. Clean-up is underway in the lower level which houses a pharmacy and a diagnostic processing area.

Earlier today CHCH News got an update from hospital president Eric Vandewall.

“Clean-up efforts have been going around the clock. We have basically cleaned up all of the area in terms of removing the remnants and sludge from the flood and so now we’re in the process of deciding what remediation in spaces, so in some cases we may have to cut 4 feet of drywall out of each of the office spaces and replace the drywall.”

“Our priority is to ensure that we have a safe and clean environment for the health patient care we provide and we’ll ensure that we also are testing and documenting to make sure we’ve met all the standards necessary to continue to provide services in those areas.”

Vandewall says by the end of the day they will have finalized a plan to have all surgical and diagnostic operations up and running by next week.
