After a two-day hearing, Jesse Kovacs’ killers still have not been sentenced. The 56-year-old former Locke Street antiques dealer died in December 2011 after the uncle/nephew duo of George and Matthew Cooke broke into his apartment to rob him. Today the crown lawyer argued it was particularly cruel the Cookes targetted Kovacs, because he was frail and easily overcome. Jesse’s sister, Mary found him lifeless, lying face down, with his hands tied behind his back. Outside court today, she said she still remembers the horror every day.

George and Matthew Cooke were found guilty of manslaughter and robbery in March. The sentencing decision was delayed for a hearing on the Cookes’ behaviour in jail awaiting trial, and whether they had hidden sharpened metal in their shared jail cell… that hearing is set for July 17th… the sentencing decision is expected July 24th.
