It’s not too late to catch up on some of the awards contenders this year. Here’s the movies highlighting home releases for January 13.

Gone Girl

David Fincher’s newest, is Gone Girl, the mystery thriller about the disappearance of Amy Dunne (Rosamond Pike), and the subsequent trail of her husband Nick Dunne (Ben Afleck). An awards favourite, so far the film has had 4 Golden Globe nominations, a Producers Guild Award nomination for Best Pictures, Pike snagged a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Actress and screenwriter Gillian Flynn received a Writers Guild Nomination for best adapted screenplay fo adapting her best selling novel. Fincher and Flynn seemed to have formed quite the partnership, the pair just announced plans to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train with Afleck. The director/writer pair are also working on adapting the British conspiracy theory television series “Utopia” for HBO. Gone Girl is rated 14A.

Love is Strange

After Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally get married after decades together. Unfortunately, for George, this life change results in another, he is fired from his teaching position at a Catholic school. The ageing couple are then forced to vacate their New York City apartment and seperate in order to find affordable temporary accommodations. George moves in with their young welcoming next door neighbours while Ben finds residence with his nephew’s family. The delightful tale of friendship, family and love was a festival favourite this year and features strong performances from both leads. Love is Strange is rated 14A.

Men, Women & Children

Director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) explores coming of age and parenthood in the age of technology with his newest film. The ensemble cast includes Adam Sandler, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer and Ansel Elgort. An interesting look at how families and individuals are affected by social media and technology, this one got mixed reviews during its theatrical run. Men, Women & Children is rated 14A.

A Walk Among the Tombstones

Based on the Lawrence Block novel of the same name, A Walk Among the Tombstones was adapted for the screen by director Scott Frank. Liam Neeson stars as P.I. Matthew Scudder who reluctantly takes a case brought to him by a drug kingpin, Dan Steven’s Kenny Kristo. Kenny is looking to avenge his wife and hires Scudder to track down the people who kidnapped and killed her even after he paid the ransom. The crime thriller is rated 14A.
