Oakville based Indy car racer James Hinchcliffe is recovering in hospital tonight after a violent crash during a practice run at the Indy 500 yesterday.

The wishbone, which is a part of the front suspension pierced the tub of the chasy where Hinch was sitting, went through the soft tissue of his right leg into his upper thigh of his left leg into his pelvis area and actually had him pinned to the race car.

Indy car tweeted that Hinchcliffe was in stable condition but will be ruled out of all Verizon Indycar series races for the foreseeable future.

Hinchcliffe is the fifth driver to be involved in an extreme crash leading up to the Indy 500. Helio Castroneves led the way last week going completely air borne. Joseph Newgarden was also in a wreck and says it’s all part of the sport. “It is rare when you get into a situation like James did but we all sign up for that when we get inside the cars and James knows that as much as anyone else.”

Hinchcliffe was travelling over 300 kilometers an hour before Honda says his right suspension failed, leading him into the wall. Executives at this year’s Honda Indy in Toronto say crashes like that won’t happen on their track.

Hinchcliffe released a statement this afternoon saying that words couldn’t describe how thankful he was to the Holmatro safety team on the track and the doctors and staff at the hospital that saved his life.
