A Toronto shoe salesman sentenced to die in his native Iran for alleged espionage is now free.

Hamid Ghassemi-Shall had been in prison since his arrest in 2008 and was sentenced to death a year later. His wife says she’s spoken with him since his release, but doesn’t know when he’s coming home.

It’s believed that Ghassemi-Shall was one of 80 political prisoners freed by Iran yesterday ahead of the United Nations gathering in New York.
