Today is International Yoga Day and millions of people around the world are striking poses to take part.

The physical, mental and spiritual practice of yoga originated in India and has been practised for over 5,000 years. To celebrate yoga day people in India have been gathering by the thousands and posing in unison. It wasn’t until the last few decades that it’s become mainstream in Western culture.

Yoga has become a multi-billion dollar industry in North America. According to the latest stats from statistics Canada 1.4 million Canadians practised in 2005. Last year, Lululemon, the Vancouver-based yoga-apparel brand, earned more than $1 billion worldwide.

There are many types of yoga like hatha, bikram and moksha and doing them in hot studios is becoming quite popular.

Yoga can be practised anywhere at any time, but many yogis agree it’s best to do it outside in the fresh air and in the morning before you start your day and according to ancient Hindu tradition, it should always be practised facing the sun.
