Insurance rates for Hamilton taxi drivers
Hamilton East MPP Paul Miller raised the question in the Legislature about insurance rates for taxi drivers in the city of Hamilton.
Miller says taxi drivers in the city lost their insurer and that has caused unprecedented increases to their insurance rates. In some cases, the rates have more than tripled. Miller called it “yet another example of an auto insurance sector that just isn’t working for people. For many of them, $18,000 a year in new auto insurance premiums literally wipes them out.”
The NDP is calling on the province to look into securing more affordable driver’s insurance rates for Ontarians. Finance Minister Charles Sousa said he will look into the situation facing Hamilton taxi drivers, though he admits it is a situation faced by drivers elsewhere in the province too.
