Ice storm damage relief

People affected by the flooding from the ice storm earlier this month can apply for some financial relief thanks to the city.

Ward 10 councillor, Maria Pearson says that city hall will enact it’s Storm Compassionate Grant that would allow qualified residents to get up to $1000.

Pearson said it can cover insurance deductibles however, only those who had water enter their home are eligible.

“It will not cover break walls, which is huge dollars to begin with, it won’t cover cleaning up debris on your backyard or whatever came up over land.”

The costs to fix some flooded homes consumed by Lake Ontario far outweigh the offer.

Counsellor Pearson is hoping that people really look into their insurance coverage and to make sure they’re covered specifically for surface over land flooding, which means water coming in from a roadway opposed to water coming from a window sill or a sump pump.
