At least nine deaths are now blamed on hurricane Matthew and there are fears that number will climb. Tuesday, the hurricane rolled ashore around 7 am near Les Anglais Haiti with winds gusting at over 230 kilometers per hour. It’s on track to strike Cuba next and after that, it could make its way to the U.S. east coast. Evacuations are already underway for the coastal areas of South Carolina.
Hurricane Matthew it’s the strongest Atlantic hurricane in over a decade. Parts of Haiti are expected to receive 40 inches of rain, sparking fear that that heavy flooding and deadly mudslides are still to come and many homes are not expected to survive the storm. Haiti still is recovering from a devastating earthquake 6 years ago, with more then 50 000 people living in shelters. A cholera epidemic that followed the earthquake has persisted, and hurricane Matthew is expected only to worsen the problem.
