Hundreds stranded after massive floods hit GTA

A sudden storm has left much of Mississauga and Toronto virtually underwater. Rain fell so quickly that streets began to flood, and rising waters started spilling into vehicles.

Widespread power outages also hit the GTA, leaving 80% of Mississauga without power. The flooding caused unprecedented traffic jams and road closures. The Don Valley Parkway was shut down shortly after the flooding began, and Terminal 3 at Pearson International Airport was also closed due to flooding.

Water filled a GO Train in Richmond Hill, forcing passengers to squeeze into the upper level of the cars. Roughly 1,000 passengers were on the ten car train, which was stuck for nearly five hours. Hundreds of cars are still stranded on city streets and major highways. The city of Toronto has issued a flood warning, asking people to remain in their homes and avoid travelling if possible.

A second set of storms is set to tear through the GTA, Halton, and Peel tonight.
