To show their support and solidarity for the people in Ukraine a rally took place Sunday in front of Hamilton’s city hall. Hundreds showed up and many who were there have personal connections to the country under attack.

Hany of the people at the rally are Ukrainian Canadian and they are in constant communication with their loved ones back home. They say they are worried about their friends and family.

Svytlana Kournyavke has family in Ukraine and says, “I just spoke with them a half an hour ago, and they are hiding in on their bathroom floor because they were told it’s the safest place in an apartment building to hide. It’s been a lot of stress, a lot of tears. I have my mom, my sister, and my niece, who is thirteen and I never thought I would see this.” Many say when their families are not fighting back-they are trying to stay safe.

While some people in Ukraine are leaving and heading over into Poland, others are choosing to stay behind and fight for their country. Many people in Ukraine are using weapons for the first time and they want the world to know it’s only in self-defense.

People CHCH News spoke with today say they will continue going to rallies to show support for their friends and family back home in Ukraine but they hope there’s not a need for them much longer and the attacks stop.
