The Hundred-Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey is a dramatic-comedy directed by Lasse Hallström, and is based on the novel of the same name by Richard C . Morais. Set in the small village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France, the film tells the story of two competing restauranteurs: Papa Kadam, the patriarch of an immigrated Indian family serving authentic Eastern cuisine at the Maison Mumbai, and Madame Mallory, who owns the established, Michelin-star rated French restaurant Le Saule Pleureur right across the street. When Papa’s son Hassan shows promising culinary talent, and a growing affection towards Mallory’s sous-chef Marguerite, the clash of cultures becomes a melting pot for their food and their lives. The film stars Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, and Charlotte Le Bon.
Producer Juliet Blake, who is the daughter of German immigrants, felt a connection to the themes of Morais’ novel after reading an advance copy of the book. “The story really resonated with me, because the characters felt like they could have been my own family. There were so many important themes: racism, acceptance and the ability to change, which relates to every immigrant story.” Blake was able to get the backing of Oprah’s production company, Harpo Films, and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks as well to get the film made.
The Hundred-Foot Journey is rated PG.
